Patek Philippe Yellow Gold Chronograph Watch Ref. 1506, Circa 1942

Among the most rarely encountered vintage chronographs produced by Patek Philippe, the Patek Philippe Reference 1506 represents one of the manufactures most intriguing and short-lived designs. Produced only briefly during the early years of the 1940sbetween 1941 and 1943the reference stands today as one of the rarest chronograph wristwatches in the firms history. Scholars estimate that fewer than twenty-five examples were made in total, with only eight known to have surfaced publicly: four in yellow gold and four in pink gold. The present watch, crafted in yellow gold and produced in 1941 before being sold in 1942, is counted among these exceptionally few surviving examples.

The reference is immediately distinguished by its striking case architecture. At 36 mm in diameter, it was notably large for its era and ranked among the most substantial chronographs offered by the manufacture at the time, comparable only to models such as the celebrated reference 530. The case design is particularly compelling: long, elegant lugs emerge fluidly from the case band, their multi-faceted surfaces creating a sense of movement and light. A sharply defined stepped bezel frames the dial, while the domed caseback gives the watch both visual depth and a refined silhouette.

Though the case has experienced careful polishing over the course of its life, the hallmarks remain clear and legible. Inside the caseback appears the hallmark of the respected casemaker Emile Vicheta 9 within a keyan emblem also found on other historically important Patek Philippe references of the era.

The dial, signed with the long Patek Philippe & Co. signature, reflects the restrained design language of early twentieth-century chronographs. Its layout is both practical and visually balanced, presenting twin registers and a tachymeter scale while preserving exceptional clarity. Beneath the dial beats the celebrated caliber 13-130 CC, a manually wound chronograph movement admired for its robustness, precision, and enduring reliability.

As one of only a handful of examples known to exist, this remarkable reference captures a moment in Patek Philippes chronograph history.
